Southampton lose 'specialist' to Liverpool following transfer deadline day

Southampton were incredibly busy at the end of the summer transfer window as they looked to put together a squad for Will Still to launch a push for promotion back to the Premier League.

In the final few days of the summer transfer window, the Saints brought in Finn Azaz from Middlesbrough, Tom Fellows from West Brom and Caspar Jander.

However, Southampton did lose some notable stars across the summer, as Tyler Dibling left for Everton, Mateus Fernandes joined West Ham, and on deadline day Will Smallbone made the move to London to join Millwall on loan.

While the transfer deadline has passed, Southampton have now lost another crucial member of their setup, as they have departed for Liverpool.

Southampton lose Lewis Mahoney to Liverpool

Liverpool finally signed the man they had been chasing all summer on deadline day, Alexander Isak joining the Reds for a British record fee, leaving Newcastle United for £125 million.

The club worked into the night after the deadline to attempt to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, but they could not get the deal over the line.

While the deadline has now passed, it has been announced that Liverpool have signed Lewis Mahoney from Southampton, as reported by the Training Ground Guru.

It has been said that he will become Liverpool’s ‘first specialist set-piece analyst’, with Mahoney coming in to help cover the loss of opposition analyst James French, who moved to Manchester City after 13 years of service at the Reds.

Who is Lewis Mahoney?

Lewis Mahoney is a Welsh national, and he is set to join Liverpool from Southampton, and he is set to work closely with Aaron Briggs, who has taken on the role of dedicated set-piece coach this season, having previously been individual development coach.

His career started at Swansea City in September 2017, where he joined as a Development Centre Coach and then became an Academy Performance Analyst Intern.

Mahoney has been Southampton’s set-piece analyst since January 2024, having previously been first-team performance analyst at Bristol Rovers for three and a half years.
