Ouch: Leeds United may face brutal double transfer reminder in 11 days' time

Leeds United were left empty handed on deadline day as their drastic late attempts to sign Harry Wilson were knocked back by Fulham.

You’d love to know what Daniel Farke is thinking right now, after weeks and weeks of making it abundantly clear that he needs more in the transfer window to consider this Leeds side capable of staying in the Premier League comfortably.

Despite the German’s consistent pleas, it amounted to nothing following Noah Okafor’s arrival, as Leeds’ frantic deadline day efforts yielded no new signings.

Leeds United miss out on two Fulham targets as 49ers face deadline day snub for Harry Wilson

Two players have stayed put at Fulham that could have easily been joining Leeds if they were willing to part ways, first it was Rodrigo Muniz, subject to a £32million offer from Elland Road back in June.

Beyond that opening offer, Leeds’ interest never really looked like materialising in anything advanced for the Brazilian, which was the story of the summer for attackers.

As the club continued to be swatted away by potential targets in the final third, their attention on deadline day turned to Fulham again with Wales international Harry Wilson.

The right-winger fit the ideal profile that Leeds needed in their attack both in his creativity and delivery from out wide, but also in his set piece prowess – something the current squad lacks after Joe Rothwell left the club in June.

Numerous reports said that Leeds’ talks with Fulham went right down to the wire with Leeds and Wilson both signing a deal sheet to extend their deadline to get a transfer over the line, only for the Cottagers to pull the plug at the last minute as they made two more winger signings of their own:

On Wilson it appears Fulham pulled out at the last minute & say they wouldn’t sell despite a deal having been agreed after an improved deal sheet offer. Prior to that Wilson’s people were asked to move him on for a price which I’m told Leeds had already met. #LUFC

Leeds United could face brutal transfer reminder as they take on Fulham after international break

The international break gives us Leeds fans a much-needed chance to switch off from any of the negative noise surrounding the end of the window, not thrust back into the pressures of a relegation scrap right away.

As Farke works with the remaining players at Thorp Arch during the break, he will have eyes on picking up more points after the week off, when his side go on the road again.

Ironically, Leeds’ Premier League action resumes with a trip to Craven Cottage to face Wilson and Muniz’s Fulham.

Marco Silva’s men have scored twice the goals Leeds have (two), but find themselves a point worse off after two draws and a loss in their opening three games, yet to keep a clean sheet.

For Wilson, his chances of getting regular minutes from hereon have been massively hampered by the arrivals of Samu Chukwueze and Kevin to strengthen their wide options, so may be watching on from the bench in 11 days’ time as his current club and the club he wanted to join meet.

The worry for Leeds is that their dream striker target might well prove why he was the man they were so patient in waiting for, only to unsurprisingly miss out.
