‘Too much indecision’… Paul Scholes baffled with Man Utd call over two players that is exposing one star in major way

Paul Scholes dropped his telling verdict on what he has seen from two Manchester United stars in the 2025-26 Premier League season under manager Ruben Amorim.

Manchester United have endured a mixed start to the 2025-26 campaign, with Ruben Amorim already placed under the spotlight over the Red Devils’ results.

The Premier League club lost 1-0 to Arsenal in their season opener at Old Trafford before United secured a 1-1 draw against Fulham at Craven Cottage last month.

However, the Red Devils’ season took an ugly turn in August after Grimsby Town knocked United out of the Carabao Cup in a stunning upset at Blundell Park.

Following United’s penalty shootout defeat to Grimsby Town, the Red Devils bounced back with a late 3-2 win against Burnley at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Paul Scholes now speaks out on Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro in Ruben Amorim’s Man Utd tactical system

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has shown his preference in the midfield with the partnership of Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro in the middle of the park.

Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro have started in the midfield pivot more than once in Amorim’s tactical system for United this season and the Red Devils have struggled.

Speaking on The Overlap, Paul Scholes said that Casemiro has been a “brilliant” player in the past, but the limitations around the United midfielder are clear.

However, the 50-year-old TNT Sports pundit added that Fernandes’ role in the two-man midfield is a major concern and the United captain is being deeply exposed.

“I think a lot of good teams have the midfield sorted […],” Scholes said.

“There’s too much indecision in the midfield area, you think of Casemiro – he’s been a brilliant player, but we know his deficiencies, don’t we?

“Fernandes [and Casemiro], they’re the two he’s going with, and Fernandes for me, he’s someone who fills in as a midfielder – he might get away with it for one, two or three games.

“He’s not got the discipline to be a central midfield player.”

Ruben Amorim still has to find an answer to the Man Utd midfield amid the Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro discourse

Amorim has been left short of midfield options after the summer window slammed shut, with United not bringing in a new midfielder for the Red Devils manager.

United had been linked with signing a defensive-focused midfielder, but a move for any key transfer target never materialised in the window and Amorim now faces a major conundrum.

Bruno Fernandes has ended up dropping into a deeper midfield role after the Red Devils signed Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo in the summer transfer window.

However, it has come at the expense of an ageing Casemiro partnering alongside the Red Devils skipper and Kobbie Mainoo losing his place in the United starting XI.
