Where Newcastle United rank on summer spending charts compared to Premier League rivals

· 2 September 2025, 20:00

**Newcastle United ultimately put their money where their mouth is this summer after promising a busy transfer window.**

The PIF had promised to spend big this summer, and with an outlay of over £256 million, we can't exactly say they broke that promise.

It's not just the amount of money that was spent, but the quality of the players that were brought in that impressed. Another record fee was paid for a player to go alongside the record-shattering sale.

We can get into the argument of how well or not the club handled the Alexander Isak situation. Everyone will have their opinion on that, but nobody can really deny that the club haven't been supported by the owner this summer, especially when you factor in the lack of a CEO and sporting director during the window (we're not counting those failures against them for the purposes of this article).

Sky Sports have ranked the Premier League clubs by net spend

Sunderland have made a huge statement with their spending

---------------------------------------------------------

Monday's huge sale of Alexander Isak went a long way to settling Newcastle's accounts from a PSR spending perspective, dropping the club's net spend down to just £99 million. There was talk of there being a £150 million kitty to play with this summer, which means the Magpies still have some change to play with in January should they need to.

That £99 million net spend lands the Magpies bang in the middle of the table. Local rivals Sunderland occupy fifth place in the table after spending a whopping £183 million and only recouping £42 million, leaving a net spend of £141 million. A bold move by the Mackems, who had to do something to give themselves any chance of surviving in the top flight this season. Only time will tell if it will pay off.

The biggest shock for us is where Chelsea ranks on the list. Transfer Meme FC, who always seem to be buying, actually do a lot of selling that just seems to go unnoticed. Chelsea actually made £18 million profit despite spending £296 million. Fair play. We wonder if the women's team and the hotels were included in those figures.

Liverpool were close to half a billion pounds in spending this summer

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Liverpool were by far the biggest spenders this summer, forking out £446 million in total, but they also clawed back £228 million in sales, which means that they actually take second spot on the league table, with Arsenal actually finishing at the top of the table for once.

The Gunners only made £10 million in player sales while forking out £267 million on new arrivals.

Newcastle, in ninth place, isn't bad at all, especially as in terms of spending, we were fourth behind only Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal.

It could be an interesting comparison to see how this spending correlates to the final league positions come May.
