Tim Spiers claims Wolves have actually made one of the 'best-value deals' of the summer

The 2025 summer transfer window will not be fondly remembered by Wolves fans.

After Vitor Pereira guided Wolves to Premier League safety at the end of 2024/25, there was real optimism with the fanbase.

Yes, there was an acceptance that Matheus Cunha and perhaps a few others would leave.

But there was an exodus at Molineux, and Wolves – who reshuffled their recruitment department – then brought in a handful of players who are unproven.

And a lot of those additions were made towards the end of the window, meaning it could take more time for them to get up to speed.

The club’s Premier League status could well be put at risk this season. Wolves have already started with three defeats.

But amid all the fury at the moment, there was one transfer deal that many – including journalist Tim Spiers – really rate.

At one point recently, it was looking like Wolves might lose Jorgen Strand Larsen.

Newcastle United came in for Strand Larsen and made two bids worth £50 million and £55 million, with Wanderers rejecting both.

He was keen for the move, but Wolves stood firm.

And on deadline day, Wolves informed Strand Larsen he would not be sold, a decision the player accepted with good grace.

Premier League clubs signed 153 players in the summer transfer window for fees totalling £3.09bn.

But how do all 153 rank, from worst to best?@TimSpiers was set the utterly thankless task of putting them in order.

Ultimately, Wolves felt there was no time to sign an adequate replacement.

Certainly, Strand Larsen has proven himself in the Premier League and of course, he actually only turned his move to Wolves permanent a couple of months ago.

And that deal is one of the best of the summer in the eyes of popular former Wolves reporter Tim Spiers, who said in The Athletic: “The fact that Newcastle were considering a bid of around £60m for a player who had cost £23m three months earlier backs up the theory that this was one of the best-value deals of the summer.

“Scored 14 league goals for a struggling Wolves team last season on loan and has the profile to kick on.”

Spiers placed Strand Larsen’s £23 million move to Wolves ninth in his list that ranked all 155 Premier League transfers this summer.

Keeping Strand Larsen was crucial for Wolves

If Wolves had sanctioned Strand Larsen’s exit, that could have spelled huge trouble for the club.

A season of struggle still lies in wait even after keeping him. But by not offloading him, Wolves have at least given themselves a chance of staying up.

We were reminded last week of how important Strand Larsen is to this team, as he scored a brilliant brace against West Ham United in the Carabao Cup.

Appearances – 41

Minutes played – 2998

Goals – 16

Assists – 5

The hope now is that he stays fit, and gets into a goalscoring groove.

His ability to score goals is not in doubt – the key thing for Wolves is ensuring the service to him is good and regular.
