Report: Why Manchester City are internally worried about Rodri's future behind the scenes

With just two years left on his contract, tying Rodri up to a long-term deal should be one of Manchester City’s biggest priorities.

Manchester City are working to extend Rodri’s contract and understandably so as he is one of their standout players.

The Spaniard won the Ballon d’Or last year, which goes to show how special a player he is.

Even big names within the game believe the 29-year-old is one of a kind, with Steven Gerrard raving about Rodri by hinting he is the best midfielder in the Premier League.

Man City insiders concerned about Rodri’s future with Real Madrid lurking

With Manchester City tying Erling Haaland to a nine-and-a-half year contract earlier this year, if they can also keep Rodri for the long haul, they would have secured the futures of arguably two of their most important players.

Real Madrid admire Rodri and they have a nigh-on flawless record of getting their hands on whichever player they set their sights on.

Flashscore have reported that the former Atletico Madrid maestro could be tempted into signing for Xabi Alonso’s side if City fail to reclaim their status as an elite side.

The report mentions that insiders at Manchester City are uneasy about his future and with Real Madrid chairman Florentino Perez keen to sign Rodri, one may argue that there is every reason to be concerned.

Rodri made a worrying admission about Man City after losing to Brighton

As things stand, the midfield maestro is perhaps focused on all things at the Etihad Stadium.

However, Manchester City’s loss to Brighton seemingly frustrated Rodri as he mentioned that with all the fresh faces joining their squad, it is difficult for his side to return to their brilliant best.

City fans may fear that such a claim could prompt Real Madrid to make a move for him unless Pep Guardiola’s men drastically improve this season and go on to lift silverware.

Rodri said: “We’re missing the level, I don’t know, call it what you want. It’s a matter of the team, changes, new players have to adapt and when you change the team that much it is difficult. This is our reality, it’s not excuses.”
