Manchester United transfer target Morten Hjulmand has refused to comment on speculation surrounding his future after failing to secure a move away from Sporting CP.

Hjulmand was one of the midfielders linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer transfer window. Despite the alarm bells within Ruben Amorim's engine room, The Manchester Evening News understands that the club didn't consider strengthening their midfield as a priority.

The Sporting CP star has been tipped to reunite with Amorim at United after working with the Portuguese in Lisbon. Hjulmand reappeared as a possible addition late in the window after United were priced out of a move for Carlos Baleba.

Tottenham and Juventus both also showed interest but their focus was placed elsewhere before the window slammed shut on Monday night.

On Tuesday, the 26-year-old was asked about his future and the transfer links after linking-up with the Danish national team for this month's international break. However, he was reluctant to be drawn into the speculation.

"Now you say rumours. And I don't relate to rumours," he said via Ekstra Bladet. "I have related to the fact that I should start at Sporting and get fit again after the holidays. I have come, and we have had some really good matches, where I think we have performed at a good level, even though we ended up losing at the weekend.

“I don’t really want to answer whether I have had anything specific to say.”

Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte, Mason Mount and Kobbie Mainoo are the options in midfield for United. Fernandes and Casemiro have started all three Premier League games this season.

Mainoo is understood to have asked to leave on loan in the latter stages of the window but his request was blocked. Amorim has since revealed that the England international is competing with Fernandes for a spot in midfield.
