Reason why Leeds United move for £52M star failed this summer

Leeds United addressed many important areas of the team in the summer window. But the recruitment plan was focused on the defence and the midfield in the early part of the summer.

Daniel Farke’s side brought in Jaka Bijol, Gabriel Gudmundsson and Sebastiaan Bornauw among others. The backline had quality and depth for the upcoming season. Leeds’ midfield was also bolstered with the additions of Anton Stach and Sean Longstaff. Farke reportedly wanted some steel and physicality in the middle of the park.

It was in the attack where the Whites were failed, despite Daniel Farke calling for reinforcements since the training camp in Germany. The Leeds boss expected at least one attacker through the door before the deadline after Saturday’s draw:

”Minimum focus is to strengthen offence, how realistic, it makes no sense to give you a percentage but we’re looking forward to strengthen offence a bit more. If it’s one or two more we will see, whatever is possible. We want the best possible squad and everyone is working hard.”

The club failed to complete a signing on deadline day.

Leeds United attempted move for Real Sociedad star

On Monday, the Whites failed with a move to sign Fulham star Harry Wilson. Leeds reportedly left it late to identify a target despite having a shortlist over the weekend. The Athletic revealed that Dilane Bakwa, Bilal El Khannouss and Gus Hamer were among the options being considered. Leeds ultimately went for Wilson as time was running out.

But the deal collapsed before the deadline, leaving the Whites empty handed.

According to Graham Smyth, Leeds were in for Real Sociedad midfielder Takefusa Kubo. The club attempted a move for the Japanese international, but the major obstacle in the way was the transfer fee. And despite waiting it out, the price tag on the player never entered a range for Leeds to afford. GOAL revealed that the attacker has a £52million release clause.

Summer window has been disappointing

Ending the window without another attacker being signed is very poor. Leeds’ start to the season has showed that the club lacks players who can put the ball into the net at this level. Daniel Farke’s side have scored just one goal and it has been from the penalty spot. If the club want to stand a chance at survival, they need players who can score goals.
