Gianluigi Donnarumma will wear the number 25 shirt at Manchester City following his deadline day arrival from Paris Saint-Germain.
The 26-year-old goalkeeper has**penned a five-year contract with the Citizens** and moves to the Etihad Stadium for a fee believed to be £26m.
It was widely reported that Donnarumma would don the No.99 shirt for the Citizens that he wore for seven seasons at boyhood club AC Milan after bursting onto the scene as a 16-year-old.
The Italy international wore numbers 1, 50 and 99 during his four-year spell at PSG, but he was forbidden from sporting the latter until the 2022-23 season when Ligue 1 scrapped rules dictating that teams could only use numbers 1 to 30.
Donnarumma received special dispensation to wear the No.50 in the 2021-22 campaign before taking the number 99, but he became PSG’s new No.1 last season following the departure of Keylor Navas and inspired Luis Enrique’s side to Champions League glory as well as a domestic treble.
While some restrictions on squad numbers remain in other leagues, players in England are free to wear any number between 1 and 99.

Donnarumma replaces Akanji as Man City’s No.25
However, Man City have confirmed that Donnarumma has opted to wear the No.25 shirt, one that carries personal significance as his birthday is February 25.
The number 25 has been vacated by defender Manuel Akanji, who has**joined Serie A side Inter Milan on a season-long loan deal** that could become permanent if certain conditions are met.
Donnarumma’s new number was also occupied by former Man City goalkeeper Joe Hart during two spells at the club between 2006-08 and 2009-2012.
The likes of Fernandinho, Emmanuel Adebayor and Wayne Bridge has also sported the No.25 shirt for Man City over the years.
Donnarumma will wear the number one jersey for Italy during the international break and he is in line to add to his 74 senior caps in 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Estonia and Israel.
Widely regarded as one of the best shot-stoppers in world football, Donnarumma will link up with his new Man City teammates next week after the international break, and he could be seen wearing his new 25 shirt number on September 14 when he will hope to make his Premier League debut in the Manchester derby at the Etihad.
