PHILADELPHIA — Comcast Tuesday officially introduced the Xfinity Mobile Arena, ending the era of the Wells Fargo Center as the home of the Philadelphia Flyers and Philadelphia 76ers.
The naming rights deal will be in place through 2031, which is when the new Sixers and Flyers arena is currently scheduled to open in south Philadelphia. It's part of a new partnership between Xfinity and owners of the center, Comcast Spectator and Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment
The center, which is also home to Villanova basketball and Philadelphia Wings lacrosse, just completed $400 million renovations in 2024.
This marks the fifth name for the facility, which opened in 1996 and replaced the legendary Spectrum. Before being dubbed the Wells Fargo Center, the arena was named the Wachovia Center from 2003 to 2010, the First Union Center from 1998 to 2003, and the CoreStates Center from 1996 to 1998.
It's the latest bit of stadium intrigue for the Sixers and Flyers, whose future together has been murky since the Sixers embarked on a failed plan to move to a new home in center city. However, the Flyers have come to an agreement with the Sixers to move into the new facility opening in 2031, and they'll be together in the "Xfinity Mobile Arena" for the final years of this facility's NHL-NBA era.
Additionally, the Xfinity Mobile Arena first arena on the East Coast to leverage newly introduced high-power WiFi, engineered to support thousands of devices simultaneously with enhanced reliability and advanced security. The Wifi network boasts 10-times faster speeds.
Xfinity Mobile and Comcast Business Mobile customers will auto-connect to in-venue speeds that are faster than any other wireless provider, according to Comcast.
And, Xfinity Mobile Arena will continue to have strong, consistent 5G service from anywhere in the building for all fans, officials said. In the coming weeks, Xfinity WiFi will extend to surrounding parking lots, keeping fans connected from tailgate to tip-off.
Since 1996, Xfinity Mobile Arena has hosted the most influential sports moments and entertainment acts in the region and continues to be one of the industry’s busiest venues, hosting the top touring musical and entertainment acts in the world.
In 2024, following the completion of a multi-year $400 million+ privately funded transformation, the arena was named by Front Office Sports to its “Best Venues” list and ranked as a top 10 U.S. venue by Pollstar for both number of tickets sold and gross revenue.
