Marc Guehi's move from Crystal Palace to Liverpool was agreed on deadline day before falling through

Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi was the subject of one of the stories of deadline day as his late move to Liverpool collapsed at the last minute.

The England international had been the subject of interest from the Reds for a good chunk of the summer and a £35m deal was finally agreed between the clubs on Monday. Guehi proceeded to undergo his medical and film a farewell video to Palace but the move collapsed after intervention from manager Oliver Glasner.

After Guehi scored and played a key role in a 3-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday, Glasner was adamant that the defender could not leave before the transfer deadline. The Guardian has reported that the Palace boss “stepped in” to prevent Guehi’s move to Anfield by “threatening to resign if he was sold”.

The move also did not go through after Igor Julio decided to move to West Ham United after it initially appeared a deal with Palace would be done.

Guehi has not agitated for a move away from Palace and has continued to play for the club amid the links to Liverpool. Comparisons have been drawn to players like Alexander Isak and Yoane Wissa, who made public statements on their futures to help move along their respective transfers to Liverpool and Newcastle United.

The same report from The Guardian mentioned above states that Guehi is “extremely unhappy” by Palace’s decision to pull the plug on his move. A deal sheet was submitted to the Premier League after the 7pm in order to get more time for the deal but it proved fruitless as the Eagles did not proceed with the deal.

It is also claimed that Guehi is “bitterly disappointed” by the u-turn. Guehi is not making a fuss about playing for Palace again but “one source close to Guéhi has said that he is considering whether to continue as captain.”

It would prove a big decision for Guehi to relinquish the captain’s armband but would underline his frustration at a deal being pulled.
