“Not how you do business” – Official slams Sunderland for breaking off transfer

NEC Nijmegen are furious with Sunderland’s refusal to allow Jenson Seelt to join them on loan in the summer window.

That’s according to [Algemeen Dagblad](https://www.ad.nl/nijmegen/nec-boos-op-sunderland-na-schenden-van-afspraak-carlos-heeft-gestuurd-dat-hij-spijt-heeft-dat-hij-roefs-aan-ze-verkocht-heeft~a58e817c/), and they report the Eredivisie side have accused the Black Cats of ‘breaching agreement’.

NEC Nijmegen sold goalkeeper Robin Roefs to Sunderland for a club-record fee of €10.5m last month.

As part of the agreement for the 22-year-old’s move to the Stadium of Light, the Dutch club had closed a deal with Sunderland to sign Seelt.

The centre-back played three games for the Premier League club before sealing a loan move to VfL Wolfsburg on deadline day.

ESPN NL caught up with NEC Nijmegen general manager Wilco van Schaik to get his views on their failure to sign the 22-year-old defender.

He explained the club’s technical director, Carlos Aalbers, was angry that Sunderland didn’t honour the verbal agreement. AD have relayed his comments.

_“I wasn’t happy about that. And certainly not Carlos. The takeover was a done deal. We closed the deal with Roefs, and then we also made a verbal agreement with Sunderland that we would acquire Seelt for this amount,”_ he said.

Roefs completed a move to the English club on August 1st, and the general manager has explained why Régis Le Bris’ side waited until the end of window to let Seelt leave.

The Dutch club, who were waiting for Seelt, were surprised with Sunderland’s decision to sanction a loan move to Wolfsburg.

_“They said they’d keep him for a while because he needed to play. Okay, no problem,”_ Van Schaik explained.

_“It just took forever. Last Sunday, they said they had so many injuries that he wasn’t allowed anymore. On Friday, they called again to say they were going to buy two more defenders after all. So he’s back. Well, we’d already made the arrangements, and suddenly we saw him in the Wolfsburg shirt yesterday afternoon._

_“That’s not how you should do business. This is the ugly side of football. I’ve never seen Carlos so angry. He texted them this morning saying he regretted selling Roefs to them. I know Carlos to be very honest and sincere, and I’ve never seen him so angry. He was done with it.”_
