English pundit gives his verdict on Manchester United’s latest signing Senne Lammens
Senne Lammens moved to Old Trafford from Belgian club Royal Antwerp in a deal worth up to £18.2 million on transfer deadline day, as Manchester United rejected the chance to bring in Emi Martinez from Aston Villa.
Manchester United decided to move for a new goalkeeper after some poor form from Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir. Bayindir, Onana’s understudy, was at fault for Arsenal’s winner in Man United’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal on the opening weekend of the Premier League season. The Turkish international was also at fault for one of Burnley’s goals at the weekend, whilst looking extremely shaky when defending set-pieces.
Onana, who missed United’s preseason schedule with a hamstring injury, made his first start of the new season against Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup. And the Cameroonian endured a dreadful night as Grimsby shocked the footballing world by dumping out Ruben Amorim’s side from the second round of the Carabao Cup.
INEOS found themselves under immense pressure to find a solution between the sticks after watching both Bayindir and Onana struggle in the opening games of the 2025/26 season, and they have decided to bring in Senne Lammens. The 23-year-old has signed a five-year deal, securing a dream move to Old Trafford.

Manchester United have signed Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp goalkeeper
Ex-Liverpool defender expects Lammens to start for Man United quickly
Former Liverpool defender turned pundit Jamie Carragher has now given his thoughts on United’s new signing, Lammens. Whilst being surprised to see Martinez not signed, he expects the 23-year-old to make his United bow quickly given the poor form of both Onana and Bayindir.
“I was expecting Emi Martinez to come in yesterday for Manchester United, just on the back of Unai Emery’s interview before the game against Crystal Palace on Sunday night,” Carragher was quoted by the Metro.
“So, I am surprised that hasn’t happened. The Belgian lad [Lammens] is obviously a young goalkeeper with great potential and it just remains to be seen how long it will be before he goes into the team.
“I would imagine that would be pretty quickly given the form of the other two goalkeepers at Manchester United.
“But he’s a young goalkeeper and, like we said when Manchester United brought in a young striker in Benjamin Sesko at the other end of the pitch, they will need time, that’s just the nature of the beast, certainly as a goalkeeper as well.
“I think the thing with the manager now is how quickly he puts this young lad in and I would imagine it would be pretty quickly.”

Manchester United goalkeepers Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir have both been awful since the start of the new season
Lammens could make his United debut in the Manchester derby
A confident, young and exciting goalkeeper with high potential, Lammens has come in to become United’s No.1. He will be challenging Bayindir and Onana for the first-team spot, although the Belgian’s arrival has put the futures of both Bayindir and Onana at Old Trafford into doubt.
Amorim’s side will face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium after the international break. The derby is always a massive occasion, so Amorim has a big decision to make on Lammens. With both Bayindir and Onana not filling the team with much confidence, we could very well see the young Belgian make his United debut in the Manchester derby. Time will tell.
