Rio Ferdinand's rating out of 10 for Man United's transfer window based on one factor

Ex-Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand has run the rule over the Red Devils' business this summer and believes the club's outgoings are just as significant as the players they've brought in

Former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand has cast his eye over United's transfer dealings this summer and ranked the club's business as a sturdy eight of out ten.

However, his generous scoring of Ruben Amorim's business during the window was primarily down to the players that United managed to sell. United's infamous 'bomb squad', consisting of Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia and Marcus Rashford, have all left Old Trafford this summer.

United also added Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens to their ranks on deadline day. The 23-year-old joins Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon as United's new arrivals, however, Ferdinand was insistent that selling was key to United's success in the window over the last few months.

Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, the ex-England defender said: "I'm going to give it [United's transfer window] a 7.5, maybe an eight.

"I think I'll give it an eight based on the players they've got out of the football club because they had the potential to affect the ambience if they were hanging around. I think it's been a good decision from the club, good active work from the people behind the scenes."

Jadon Sancho

Jadon Sancho has left Manchester United to join Aston Villa on loan

Garnacho signed for Chelsea on a permanent deal for £40million, while Marcus Rashford joined Barcelona on a season-long loan earlier on in the summer. Antony and Rasmus Hojlund joined Real Betis and Napoli respectively.

Sancho has followed in the footsteps of Rashford by moving to Aston Villa on a season-long loan, with Rashford having spent the latter half of last season at Villa Park.

Villa have agreed to cover 80% of Sancho's wages, but the deal includes achievable bonuses which will mean his wages should be covered in full during his spell in Birmingham. Sancho name-checked Rashford upon his unveiling at Villa.

He said: "I spoke to him while he was here last season and I know he really enjoyed it. He said so many lovely things about the club, like how it’s a family and you feel that friendly environment with great players and staff. I definitely felt that as I came in."

Kobbie Mainoo and Tyrell Malacia were also heavily linked with late summer window exits but will now stay at United for the time being. The latter saw a loan switch to Elche collapse, but could still be moved on with the trading periods in Turkiye and Saudi Arabia still active.

Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez was also heavily considered by United as an option between the sticks, with the World Cup winner even left out of Unai Emery's squad to face Crystal Palace on Sunday evening.

However, the club opted for Lammens. A late swoop for Atletico Madrid and England midfielder Conor Gallagher also failed to materialise for United.
