Man Utd made a late attempt to sign a midfielder in the summer transfer window.
Manchester United made a late attempt to reinforce their midfield in the summer transfer window. It was a busy deadline day at Old Trafford, as Senne Lammens completed his transfer from Royal Antwerp, while the likes of Rasmus Hojlund, Jadon Sancho and Antony all left the club.
United ended the summer with five new senior signings, but it is understood they wanted to make it six with a late loan bid for Atletico Madrid star Conor Gallagher. United approached to sign the 25-year-old on a season-long loan, but the La Liga club made it clear they would only allow Gallagher to leave on a permanent transfer.
United sources later claimed midfield had not been a 'priority' position for them to address in the summer, though they still made an enquiry for Gallagher and spent weeks chasing Carlos Baleba. A midfield refresh will have to be a priority next year, with United in the market for at least two central midfielders in the next stage of their rebuild.

Romano confirms Gallagher approach
Manchester United and Crystal Palace both reportedly made attempts to sign Conor Gallagher on loan from Atletico Madrid in the final hours of the summer transfer window. Neither side was able to get a deal agreed though, with the Spanish club adamant they would only have let the former Chelsea man leave for a transfer fee.
It means United have just five senior central midfielders at their disposal for the rest of the campaign, and it might even be argued they only have four, given Mason Mount is better-suited to an attacking role.
Speaking in his latest YouTube video, notorious transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano confirmed the approach for Gallagher. "In the last 48 hours of the summer transfer window, Man United tried to sign Conor Gallagher," he said.
"Man United considered the possibility to go for Conor Gallagher. It was not possible to make it happen, because Manchester United wanted to sign Gallagher on a loan deal, while Atletico Madrid already rejected a loan approach from Crystal Palace ten days ago.
"The top targets on loan for Palace were Conor Gallagher and Yeremy Pino. Pino arrived, Gallagher they tried to bring back to the club, he knows the club very well. But the answer from Atletico to Manchester United was no, no chance to that surprise proposal in the final hours of the summer transfer window. They tried for a midfielder, but no for the deal."
