New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner battled a calf injury during the summer that could have put his availability against the Pittsburgh Steelers in jeopardy, but the star cornerback says he is good to go.
“Everything is good,” Gardner said about his calf. “I’m just getting ready to play on Sunday."
Gardner practiced on Tuesday, but missed time over the last few weeks with what the team has described as a ‘sore calf.’ The star cornerback seems to have overcome that injury, though calf injuries can always be tricky.
Gardner talked during training camp about facing Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf, and he is notably excited to get a crack at him on Sunday.
“Me and DK don’t even talk,”Gardner said on the Kay Adams Show. “When he gets mad about something, he wants to block you hella hard. That’s his thing. I feel like I can get to him, but that’s how he takes his anger out. If he gets mad, he wants to go block somebody hella hard, or when he got the ball, he wants to try to run somebody over. I respect that.”
Metcalf has been known for his physicality given his impressive size at the position. He has also has elite speed, making him a unique blend of strength and athleticism.
The Steelers will be counting on Metcalf to be a consistent threat against other teams this year in the passing game, and his first test against Gardner will be a litmus test for how that will look.
