‘Hearing…’ - Journalist says Leeds made 11th hour move to sign ‘world-class’ star on deadline…

Leeds United explored a late deal for Sheffield United midfielder Gustavo Hamer on transfer deadline day, journalist Danny Hall has revealed.

The Elland Road side reportedly made a late move for the 2024/25 Championship Player of the Season as they looked to bolster Daniel Farke’s midfield further following a busy three months in the market.

Leeds welcomed a total of 10 new players during the summer window, including midfielders Sean Longstaff and Anton Stach, who joined from Newcastle and Hoffenheim respectively.

Farke’s side endured a fairly quiet deadline day, as no new signings were announced following James Justin’s arrival from Leicester last week.

According to Hall, it remains unclear whether Leeds’ late interest in Hamer materialised into an official bid on transfer deadline day:

Hamer has been linked with a Bramall Lane departure this summer, with reports claiming multiple Premier League clubs had the ‘world-class’ 27-year-old on their radar.

The former Netherlands U20 international, who joined Sheffield United from Coventry in the summer of 2023, saw his stock rise sharply following an impressive Championship campaign, with nine goals and seven assists in 41 appearances.

He registered a further two goal contributions in the play-offs, where Sheffield United fell to a 2-1 defeat to Sunderland in the final at Wembley in May.

Hamer was voted Championship Player of the Season for 2024/25, following in the footsteps of current and former Premier League aces Crysencio Summerville, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Chuba Akpom.

He is under contract with the Blades until the summer of 2027 and has played every single minute of their Championship campaign this term, starting all four games.

Leeds conducted transfer business with Sheffield United last summer, signing full-back Jayden Bogle on a long-term deal, while fellow wide defender Jamie Shackleton went the other way and joined the Blades on a free transfer.
