Journalist believes Manchester United star would’ve ‘thought twice’ about career choice

Bryan Mbeumo would have “thought twice” about deciding to play for Cameroon, if he had seen himself joining Manchester United.

That’s according to journalist Hiondi Nkam, [via Actu Cameroun](https://actucameroun.com/2025/09/03/hiondi-nkam-si-mbeumo-avait-su-son-niveau-actuel-il-aurait-hesite-pour-les-lions-indomptables/), who believes the Manchester United forward would have decided his international future differently if he’d imagined his career going the way it has.

Mbeumo joined Manchester United in a €75m deal this summer after six years impressing at Brentford, where he managed 70 goals and 51 assists in 424 games for the club.

He had previously come through at Troyes in France and joined the Bees in 2019, establishing himself as a key player with them as they rose to the Premier League and established themselves in England’s top flight.

The attacker elected to play for Cameroon after a meeting with Samuel Eto’o in London, switching allegiance from France, who he had previously played for at U17, U20 and U21 level earlier in his career.

That decision was partly made because of the competition in the France squad, which is paced to the brim with attacking talent. Nkam, though, believes the Manchester United summer signing wouldn’t have made that decision if he’d seen where his career was going.

_“Bryan Mbeumo is also a unique case,”_ he said on Canal Press.

_“Bryan, I can assure you that if he himself had known he was capable of the performances he is achieving today at Manchester United, he would have thought twice before joining the Indomitable Lions.”_
