Crystal Palace have been warned about the future of Oliver Glasner amid the Marc Guehi debacle.
Eze had reached a point of his talent requiring him to take a step up, while Guehi was not only in a similar situation based on his talent, but he is also out of contract next summer, and Palace faced the choice of selling him or potentially losing a valuable player for free next summer. Though, they of course have the option of selling Guehi on the cheap in January, too.
Guehi looked all set to join Liverpool on deadline day, even having a medical, but his transfer was blocked at the last minute, with Palace failing to sign proposed replacement Igor Julio, who ultimately decided to join West Ham instead.
Guehi will remain at Palace at least until January, but he is said to be unhappy with the fact he was not allowed to leave. that’s not an ideal situation for Glasner as he looks to guide his team through a season that will include Conference League football, and it’s no secret that the Paace boss has been left frustrated.
Glasner has voiced his frustration over poor recruitment a couple of times throughout the summer, and he was questioned the board over why they did not replace Guehi, pointing out that the Eagles knew this situation would arise coming into the summer.
Poor preparation is likely to blame, but not only could it cost Palace tens of millions with Guehi, but it might cost them Glasner, who has been a superb manager during his time at the club.
“The Marc Guehi situation has not helped things with the manager,” former Premier League scout pondered when speaking to Football Insider. “There are tensions behind the scenes, he’s not happy even to the point where he’s threatened to walk away in certain circumstances, and Guehi isn’t happy either.
“The chairman made a decision that went directly against the manager’s wishes, that’s not the type of situation any manager wants to be in. He’s only got a year left on his contract, and I would say he’s highly likely to leave when his deal runs out because of the way things have gone.
“Glasner has been quite vocal about what he expects from the club. He wanted to be backed in the transfer market, to get deals done early, and to keep their best players. I appreciate that’s not always possible, and it’s been a difficult summer for Palace off the pitch, but it hasn’t helped the relationship between them.
“They’d already sold Eze, granted they brought in a replacement for him quickly, but then selling Guehi would have been a major blow to their team. So you can see why the manager is annoyed, and I think it would be difficult for Palace to tie him down to a new contract unless something dramatic happens.”
