West Ham and Bournemouth targets, winger mystery – Leicester City transfers that didn't happen

Leicester City completed three deadline-day deals to strengthen Marti Cifuentes’ squad and inject a fresh feel into the group.

But Julian Carranza, Jordan James and Aaron Ramsey were not the only players to be linked with a switch to City in the final few days of the window.

With James and Ramsey signed, midfield was a priority position for City, especially with Bilal El Khannouss leaving for Stuttgart.

It seems they were not the only players City took a look at, with The Athletic reporting that the club tried to bring in Scotland international Andy Irving from West Ham.

Wrexham were also keen, but Irving, who has made two substitute appearances for the Hammers this season, was not keen on dropping into the Championship, and so no move went ahead.

There were also suggestions that City had offered free agent Josh Brownhill a big contract, although that does not align with the club’s attempts to cut down their wage bill.

The midfielder, who won promotion with Burnley last season, is still a free agent, also reportedly rejecting Wolves. There are suggestions he will head to Saudi Arabia to join Al-Shabab.

City were linked with a host of wingers in the 72 hours before the window closed, but come deadline day they had no interest in pursuing any of those supposed targets.

The club did not make any attempt to sign Jesurun Rak-Sakyi from Crystal Palace on Monday, while despite the nerves of Portsmouth fans that their reigning player of the season Josh Murphy would be poached by City, there was no late move for him either.

Reports from the south coast suggested Pompey rejected two City bids for Murphy, who registered 14 assists in the Championship last season.

Furthermore, the Bournemouth Echo have said that the Cherries gave their right-sided winger Romain Faivre a chance to speak to City and a host of other clubs, but that that Frenchman turned down the opportunity in order to remain at the Vitality Stadium.

City did lose one of Marti Cifuentes’ four main wingers in Kasey McAteer, who will now have to be replaced with one of the many internal options the club have, with Silko Thomas the favourite.

Perhaps City’s moves for wingers were in case there were late Premier League moves for Abdul Fatawu.

The Ghanaian was linked to Everton and Fulham in the final days of the window, and so perhaps City were lining up targets in case an offer that could not be refused came their way.

Once they knew on deadline day that Fatawu was not going anywhere, there was no need to pursue wingers.

Elsewhere, most of the players City were linked to stayed put. Goalkeeper Jonas Omlin remained at Borussia Monchengladbach, while there were no moves for Anton Saletros (AIK), Eric Smith (St Pauli), Amine Chabane (Amiens), nor Moussa Sylla (Schalke).

However, Swedish youth international striker Jusef Erabi, who played under Cifuentes for Hammarby, did get a move, joining Belgian side Genk in a £4.3m move.
