Newcastle United will be pleased the summer transfer window has now finally closed having addressed all the key areas of their squad ahead of their return to the Champions League. Alexander Isak's departure for Liverpool will undoubtedly be a stain the club's history books this summer, but Eddie Howe will be pleased to have signed Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa to bolster the striker ranks.

Although the transfer window closed on Monday at 7pm, with the Magpies unable to splash the cash on any more incoming signings, there remains the possibility they could dip their toe into the free agent market, should worst come to worst.

With that in mind, ChronicleLive has taken a look at at some of the free agents who the Magpies could still sign;

Left-back cover

Lewis Hall is expected to continue to be Howe's first-choice left-back after impressing there last season - prior to his injury near the end of the 2024/25 campaign. However, it's for that reason the Magpies boss may look to bring in cover if the England youth international were to suffer a setback on his return from injury.

It's worth saying the Toon have plenty of options out there, with Dan Burn and Tino Livramento able to operate out on the left-hand side of defence, while Kieran Tripper can also play at left-back - though it's somewhat of an unorthodox position.

Looking at the list of free agents, former Spurs defender Sergio Reguilon is the most valuable left-back available on a free - according to Transfermarkt. They claim the Spanish international is valued in the region of €6million (£5.2m), even without a club.

Although a return is highly unlikely, Jamal Lewis is one of the left-backs out of contract this summer, as are Juan Bernat and Diego Laxalt.

Striker options

Following Isak and Wilson's departures this summer, Newcastle moved to bring in Woltemade and Wissa, with Will Osula also still at the club, despite a reported interest from Eintracht Frankfurt, and big things are expected of Sean Neave.

The latter of the quartet may not be deemed Premier League ready, with Woltemade expected to lead the line when Wissa jets off to the African Cup of Nations in the winter months.

There are also a number of free agents who Newcastle could target as a last resort, should the German get injured and other alternative options exhausted. Paco Alcacer, Emmanuel Dennis, Patrick Bamford, Karl Toko Ekambi, Wissam Ben Yedder and Michail Antonio are potential targets should worst come to worst.

Central midfielders

Newcastle have scouted Inter Milan midfielder Davide Frattesi, and they were linked with the Italy international following injuries to Joelinton and Sandro Tonali in their defeat to Liverpool. However, with the transfer window now shut, so is that avenue until January.

There are still a number of viable options on the table if Newcastle suffer from an injury crisis. Ex-Burnley player Josh Brownhill was one of the standout performers in the Championship last season in their promotion winning campaign and is out of contract after leaving Turf Moor.

Former Brentford player Josh Dasilva is also out of contract, as is Christian Eriksen and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain who both boast plenty of experience at top-flight level and could sign short-term deals.

The Magpies' midfield is their strongest department and so any free agent signings would likely return to squad member status should any injury crisis hit the squad, ruling out key players.
