Emiliano Martínez tears after Aston Villa’s last home game of the season left everyone feeling an exit was on his agenda.
Whatever the goalkeeper says when he does finally speak, it’s clear he wouldn’t have made such an emotional goodbye if he didn’t believe he’d be leaving the Birmingham club this summer.
Throughout the past few months the Argentine media have endlessly linked the stopper to Manchester United, at times presenting it as a transfer that was a matter of when and not if.
Ultimately, the transfer proved harder to negotiate than they expected in Argentina and Martínez remains at Aston Villa. That situation is awkward but certainly not beyond salvation and players have returned to be favourites under worse circumstances.
Whether Unai Emery chooses to turn back to Martínez is uncertain right now. The Spanish manager was clearly agitated at the weekend when he kept repeating Marco Bizot as an answer, but he’ll ultimately choose what is best for his team.
Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni also wants what is best for his team, and uncertainly around Martínez, such a hero for the national side, isn’t helpful.
Speaking at a press conference today, [TyC Sports](https://www.tycsports.com/seleccion-argentina/lionel-scaloni-conferencia-de-prensa-seleccion-argentina-vs-venezuela-id683799.html) quote Scaloni as saying: “_We’ll see if Dibu loses continuity at his club, we’re not going to get ahead of ourselves. I understand that, if he stays, everything will continue as normal. We want him to play. But it’s not my decision. We’ll see.”_
There’s not a lot of transfer options left for the Aston Villa player, and his mind will now be on Argentina. Martínez wants to break the country’s record for the most clean sheets achieved and has spoken about being somewhat obsessed with it.
