Huge Leeds United transfer update as club executive effectively rules out January moves

Leeds United started their transfer window off with so much promise, but the end really left a sour taste in the fans’ mouths. Almost everyone was expecting the club to at least bring in a new face on Monday, but they were surprised.

Despite agreeing a deal to sign Harry Wilson, it fell through at the last hour and the transfer was called off. After weeks of asking for attacking reinforcements, Daniel Farke was not given anything to work with on Monday.

It is now a very delicate position for the club, because reinforcements were needed in attack. However for some reason, Leeds were just not willing to spend enough to sign some of these targets.

Robbie Evans hints that Leeds United will not make January transfers

Leeds United Managing Director Robbie Evans has been speaking to the media about what happened in the transfer window. One of the explanations he gave for the lack of spending big on targets is that the club had maxed out their PSR for this season. This made it difficult to spend above a certain amount in this past window.

Evans said that Leeds’ aim in January is to completely avoid any transfers:

“But our goal is to avoid January, if possible. So there’s a reason we didn’t do a big thing in January last year or the year before. The goal is to be done early.

“And actually we got all of our core guys done before the season even began, for that reason. So not just before deadline day, but actually before August was the goal with the key ones.

“And so it’s there, but we don’t see using free agency as a priority because there’s only a handful of players we felt were good enough to begin with, and the pool obviously shrinks dramatically when you go from the entirety of the window, or the players in the window to the handful of free agents that are available.”

Bad news for the club

Hearing that your ownership would preferable not make any signings in January is shocking. If the club enters that part of the season and need a few changes in order to survive relegation, you surely have to go for it. Leeds fans will have to hope the 49ers’ stance on this is flexible.
