Packers ‘could be best team in the league’ NFL analyst says

General manager Brian Gutekunst and the Packers changed the landscape of the NFL with the franchise’s blockbuster trade to acquire All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons.

Parsons, who has posted 52.5 career sacks, joins an ascending defense and a roster that is loaded with homegrown talent on both sides of the football, potentially playing Green Bay into the Super Bowl conversation.

“I’d expect the Packers to use Micah the same way Dallas did,” an NFL scout told me shortly after the trade was announced. “But, Jeff Hafley may use him in space, too. He’s mainly going to be a pass rusher there.”

One of the premier pass rushers in the sport, Parsons has the chance to elevate coordinator Jeff Hafley’s defense, significantly.

According to ESPN NFL analyst Bill Barnwell, the Packers have gone from a young and exciting roster, overnight, to one that can play for a championship thanks to Parsons’ arrival.

“If they were missing a bit of star power,” Barnwell writes of the Packers, for ESPN. “They got all they needed with the addition of Parsons, who is one of the best defensive players in football. Assuming that Parsons doesn’t miss significant time with his back issue, the Packers added the same player who made the Cowboys the best defense in the NFL when he was on the field and its worst when he wasn’t. The Packers did so while subtracting just one player from the current roster in defensive tackle Kenny Clark.

“The Packers aren’t perfect, of course. Their run defense is suddenly a question mark after the departures of Clark and T.J. Slaton Jr. Jordan Love has been inconsistent, and while there are reasons to talk yourself into the guy we saw in the second half of 2023 and 2024 as the real Love, it’s entirely possible we get another year with high highs and low lows from the 26-year-old signal-caller. If we get the post-Toyotathon version of Love for 17 games, though, the Packers could be the best team in the league. With some reservations about the Lions and Vikings, I’m pushing the Packers into first place in the NFC North.”

Given the injuries and turnover that the Lions are facing in Detroit, and potential growing pains in the Caleb Williams-Ben Johnson partnership in Chicago, the Packers could be best positioned to make a run at the NFC North crown and much more than that in the season ahead.

Before Parsons’ arrival, the Packers were potentially a team on the cusp of contending, how, Green Bay might be one of the league’s top teams to beat.
