"I am getting better" - The statistics behind Sesko's early Man United struggles

Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko has said that the level of the matches in the Premier League are "much higher", with the Slovenian making a slow start to his Red Devils career.

Sesko joined Man United from RB Leipzig last month, with the deal for the 22-year-old worth up to £73.7m, and he has made four appearances for his new club at the start of the 2024-25 campaign.

The striker has appeared off the bench against Arsenal, Fulham and Burnley in the Premier League, in addition to playing the full 90 minutes against Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup, but he is yet to find the back of the net.

Sesko has now linked up with the Slovenia squad for their 2026 World Cup qualification matches against Switzerland and Sweden, where he will be hoping to score his first goal of the season.

The forward has admitted that he has been surprised by "the level" of the games in England, but he is confident that he will eventually get used to playing in the Premier League, branding it "the highest level in the world of football".

“The level of the matches is certainly much higher, the players and teammates are also at a higher level," Sesko told Ekipa. “After all, English football is at the highest level in the world of football.

“But I am very much looking forward to the coming period, also because I am getting better and faster in every training session, and I am also progressing in my football mentality every day.”

Sesko's only start for Man United came against Grimsby Town in the second round of the EFL Cup, and he found it difficult to make his mark, only having 27 touches over the 90 minutes, while he won just one of his seven aerial duels and only two of his six on the ground, according to Sofascore.

The forward did manage two shots on target against Grimsby and scored in the shootout, but it was a tough night for the Slovenian, who suffered with cramp after the match, which saw him register just 27 touches.

Against Arsenal, Sesko played 25 minutes, touching the ball just seven times, but he was given longer against Fulham in gameweek two, touching the ball 17 times during his 37 minutes on the field.

Sesko won two of his three aerial duels against Fulham, completing 10 of his 13 passes, but he did not manage a shot on target or off target in his second league appearance of the season.

The striker was introduced for the final 18 minutes against Burnley, and he only touched the ball eight times, but he had two headers off target and finished with a 100% pass success rate.

All in all, it has been a very slow start to his career, but Ruben Amorim needs to start him in the Premier League sooner rather than later, and that could occur against Manchester City in the Manchester derby on September 14 depending on the fitness of Matheus Cunha, who went off with a hamstring issue against Burnley.

Man United will be hoping that Sesko gets two solid games under his belt during the international break, meanwhile, which would aid his chances of being in the XI for the Manchester derby.
