Opinion: The craziest Nottingham Forest transfer rumour that didn’t come true this summer, he…

Nottingham Forest had one of the best summer transfer windows in the Premier League.

Nottingham Forest signed a whopping 13 players, shelling out in excess of £200m, making them the sixth-highest spenders.

Evangelos Marinakis sanctioned a spending spree after CAS confirmed their spot in the Europa League following Crystal Palace’s appeal.

Nuno Espirito Santo also got his wish of signing full-back cover, as Nicolo Savona and Oleksandr Zinchenko joined late on in the window.

Looking back at the three months, there were some pretty crazy transfer rumours that didn’t end up materialising and here is the most mental one.

Nottingham Forest’s craziest transfer rumour of the summer

There were quite a few wacky transfer rumours this summer, with Christopher Nnunku linked with a move to the City Ground before joining AC Milan.

Another rather surprising one was when Forest were exploring a deal to sign Matheus Cunha, who eventually made a £62.5m switch to Manchester United.

However, perhaps the most stunning rumour was when Forest were targeting Viktor Gyokeres after his sensational season at Sporting.

The Tricky Trees even made contact with Gyokeres’ representatives to gauge whether he’d be open to joining.

Ultimately, Arsenal landed the Swedish striker’s signature for around £64m and he has already scored two Premier League goals in three outings.

Nottingham Forest made stunning signings anyway

If Forest fans were told at the start of the window that they’d be signing the likes of Douglas Luiz and Dan Ndoye, to name only a couple, they’d be pretty surprised.

Pretty much every addition Marinakis and his chiefs have made have been courted by some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

James McAtee, for instance, was wanted by Borussia Dortmund, but Forest managed to win the race for his signature.

Dilane Bakwa was hot property all window, and so too was Arnaud Kalimuendo, so there’s no doubt Nuno has been backed and some.

Expectations will be set high in the Forest boardroom, and with European football on the horizon, there could be some really special moments this term.
