Orchard Park, N.Y. — Buffalo Bills starting cornerback Tre’Davious Whitelower-body is still not able to practice two weeks removed from a lower body injury right before the team’s final preseason game.
Bills coach Sean McDermott gave an injury update on Wednesday and said that it’s White’s goal to play against the Baltimore Ravens in the season opener.
“Tre’Davious won’t practice, not ruling him out at this point, but he will not practice today,” McDermott said. “He’s a pro, right? You know Tre White and he’s always going to be studying and whether he’s in the training room watching his iPad or at home or here getting his rehab in at the same time. So he really wants to be out there and we want him out there.”
White hasn’t practiced since sustaining the injury on Aug. 21. The Bills are already without rookie first-round pick Maxwell Hairston, who is rehabbing on injured reserve after a knee injury ended his training camp after less than a week at St. John Fisher University.
If White is unable to play on Sunday, the Bills will have to call on either rookie sixth-round pick Dorian Strong or veteran Ja’Marcus Ingram. McDermott said he believes both players will be ready if they’re needed to play.
“Those guys, they take a lot of pride in the preparation piece of things,” McDermott said. “Dorian, obviously being new to us, but we’ve got great leadership on this team that can set a good example for them all the while.”
There is some good news on the injury front. Bills starting cornerback Christian Benford returned to practice after missing last week with a lower-body injury. He was limited, but was in uniform and moving around well and cutting off both sides.
Safety Jordan Hancock is working back from a shoulder injury that occurred in the preseason finale against the Buccaneers. He returned to practice in a limited capacity on Wednesday.
The Bills are getting healthier at wide receiver. Khalil Shakir practiced again (limited) after missing most of the summer with a high ankle sprain. Veteran Curtis Samuel missed practice last week with what McDermott said was a personal issue. McDermott said that Samuel is good to go after returning to practice.
