The Dallas Mavericks have re-signed guard Danté Exum. To make room on the roster, the Mavs have requested waivers on 2023 first-round pick Olivier-Maxence Prosper.
In 75 games (30 starts) across two seasons with Dallas, Exum has posted career highs for points (8.0), field goal percentage (.516), 3-point field goal percentage (.472), free throw percentage (.768), rebounds (2.4) and assists (2.8). His 47.2% (76-161 3FG) mark from beyond the arc with Dallas is the highest 3-point field goal percentage in franchise history (min. 100 3FGA).
Re-signing Exum provides the Dallas Mavericks with guard depth, especially in Kyrie Irving’s absence. Although injury concerns remain, Exum proved to be a versatile backcourt player for the Mavs on the court. Exum provides strong on-ball defense, secondary playmaking, and efficient scoring. With the additions of D’Angelo Russell and Brandon Williams, the Mavs have diversified their guard rotation. Exum’s ability to play defense offers Jason Kidd balance and a reliable option on both ends of the court.
Prosper appeared in 92 games (five starts) since arriving to Dallas, averaging 3.5 points, 2.2 rebounds and 0.7 assists.
Waiving Prosper was a strategic move by the Dallas Mavericks. While Prosper showed defensive potential and athleticism, he did not developed quickly enough to secure a consistent role in a win-now rotation. With Anthony Davis, Cooper Flagg, PJ Washington, Naji Marshall, and Caleb Martin all ahead of him in the rotation, opportunities for playing time in meaningful situations would have been limited. With a crowded frontcourt and limited minutes available, Prosper’s path to playing time was unclear. Instead, the Mavs chose to prioritize guard depth by re-signing Exum.
