In an interview with Mathieu Proulx, Benjamin St-Juste spoke frankly about the challenges of his young NFL career. The Québécois defensive back, now a member of the Los Angeles Chargers, explained that he had sometimes lost sight of the essence of his game by allowing himself to be distracted by expectations and projections.
“I had started to think too far ahead, listening to what people were saying about my stats or my potential. I kind of forgot what had led me to be a starter in the NFL,” confided St-Juste.
The former Washington Commanders player admits to having changed his style of play, which affected his performance. Now, he wants to get back to basics: relying on his size, strength and physical game.
“I'm going back to my roots, to my technique, to what has always made me successful,” he says.
Back to basics for better performance
St-Juste, who stands out for his length and physical presence, admits to having put too much pressure on his shoulders. Today, he focuses more on consistency, discipline and a more relaxed approach.
“My coach reminded me that in moments of pressure, you shouldn't try to be someone else. Just be yourself,” he says.
This return to a simpler philosophy reflects the maturity of a player who knows that the NFL is as much a mental challenge as a physical one. With the Chargers, he sees an opportunity to start afresh, surrounded by a coaching staff that believes in his abilities. At just 27, St-Juste still has a lot to offer. His willingness to refocus on what he does best could well enable him to revive his career and establish himself as a pillar of the Chargers' defense.
“I feel ready to write a new chapter,” concludes the Québécois, determined to demonstrate that his best football is yet to come.
