Opinion: Three reasons why Newcastle should be proud of their summer transfer window

A chaotic transfer window is finally over for Newcastle United and there are reasons to feel positive about it all.

While even the most ardent supporter would surely admit that it was a difficult window and that major mistakes were made, Newcastle United did end it in reasonably positive fashion.

Indeed, owners PIF are proud of the work Newcastle did in the summer transfer window, having made six senior signings all without a sporting director and a CEO in place.

Alexander Isak’s departure was hardly welcome but, long-term, it may give Newcastle the funds to further strengthen a squad that was already added to significantly this summer.

With that in mind, Geordie Boot Boys looks at three reasons for Newcastle fans to feel positive.

Signings in key areas

Newcastle brought in what looks like a guarantee of Premier League goals in the form of Yoane Wissa, who bagged 19 for Brentford last season without taking a penalty.

Fellow new arrival Nick Woltemade, meanwhile, looks like one of the most exciting young strikers in Europe. While expecting either of them to immediately replace Isak would be too much, the hope will be that they share the 23 Premier League goals he scored last season between them.

Newcastle have high hopes for Jacob Ramsey, who offers crucial depth to their midfield.

Keeping Sandro Tonali and Tino Livramento

Newcastle know that other clubs are interested in Sandro Tonali and Tino Livramento but managed to keep both.

Tonali was tipped for a move back to Italy, while Livramento was strongly linked with Manchester City.

Losing either of them all while the Isak saga played out would have been catastrophic. Before the Sweden international kicked off, Tonali and Livramento were the ones constantly being linked away.

Now, Newcastle are ready to open contract talks with Tonali and are believed to be in active discussions with Livramento.

Hopefully, that helps the club avoid another unwelcome saga next summer.

Room to spend in January

Newcastle are confident they will have money to spend in January following Isak’s sale.

That is a huge boost for Howe, who hasn’t been afforded a major mid-season signing since Anthony Gordon way back in 2023.

Newcastle’s net spend gives them room to manoeuvre. They’ve not only significantly bolstered the squad for the months ahead, but are now in a position to do so again when the January sales open.

The January transfer window is a notoriously difficult one in which to extract value but having the option to bolster the ranks is a luxury Howe has not often had at Newcastle.
