Rookie wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa was among the notable players absent from the Detroit Lions’ Tuesday practice.
At the time, there was no clarity on why the Hudsonville native sat out as the Lions prepared for their Week 1 showdown at Lambeau Field against the Green Bay Packers. On Wednesday, head coach Dan Campbell provided an update.
“He just had a little bug,” Campbell said during an appearance on 97.1 The Ticket’s Costa and Jansen. “I think he’ll be all right here. He’s coming into the building today. He’s been in virtual meetings. I know he feels a lot better, but we’ll see.”
TeSlaa, a third-round pick in this year’s draft, turned heads during training camp and backed it up with strong preseason performances.
If his health cooperates, the 6-foot-4 speedster should be featured in packages this weekend as part of a loaded Lions wide receiver room that includes Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Kalif Raymond.
TeSlaa’s emergence also made veteran receiver Tim Patrick expendable. Shortly after finalizing their 53-man roster, the Lions traded Patrick to the Jacksonville Jaguars following a rough training camp.
Quickly becoming a fan favorite, TeSlaa has been dubbed “ColeSlaa” -- a play on the dish coleslaw -- a nickname that has caught on and one the rookie reportedly embraces.
Asked if he had heard the nickname repeated inside the team, Campbell laughed.
“No, I haven’t heard that one per se. I’ve heard some that are a little more raunchy than that, but I can’t state what those are,” Campbell joked. “I don’t know if coleslaw is necessarily stuck. There’s a lot that are getting thrown against the wall right now.”
