Aston Villa’s squad for the Europa League group stage has been confirmed.
Unai Emery had room to name 25 players in his List A squad. However, four spots must be reserved for 'club-trained players' - those who were registered with the club for at least three full seasons, or 36 months, between the ages of 15 and 21.
An additional four places are reserved for 'association-trained players' - players who were with another club in the same national association under the same age and time criteria.
As a result, Villa can only name 21 players in their List A squad who are not 'club-trained'. Following Jacob Ramsey’s transfer to Newcastle United, Lamare Bogarde is the only player regularly involved in the first-team who qualifies as a club-trained player.
However, Bogarde has been named in Villa’s List B squad, as he was born after January 1, 2004. Players on List B are eligible to play in the Europa League but are not included in the main List A squad.
Including Bogarde, Villa have 23 players in their senior squad following the deadline-day arrivals of Victor Lindelöf, Jadon Sancho, and Harvey Elliott.
As a result, Emery was forced to leave one first-team player out of the Europa League List A squad for the league phase.
He has decided to leave Ross Barkley out of the List A team, according to UEFA's website.
Here’s the full List A squad of 21 players...
Goalkeepers Emi Martínez, Marco Bizot.
Defenders Matty Cash, Andres Garcia, Ezri Konsa, Victor Lindelöf, Tyrone Mings, Pau Torres, Lucas Digne, Ian Maatsen.
Midfielders Boubacar Kamara, Amadou Onana, Youri Tielemans, John McGinn.
Attackers Ollie Watkins, Donyell Malen, Evann Guessand, Emi Buendía, Morgan Rogers, Jadon Sancho, Harvey Elliott.
