Coen on Jaguars Growth Before 2025 Season Opener: "There is confidence…"

The Jaguars enter Sunday with many firsts and therefore many unknowns. But there's unquestionably much belief in the building, too.

"There is confidence," Coen said.

Coen, who will coach is his first game as a head coach Sunday, reiterated a theme he emphasized throughout training camp and preseason – that eliminating avoidable penalties and mistakes will be critical early.

"When we've executed in three phases the way we'd like to execute every play, it can look darn good," Coen said. "If we shoot ourselves in the foot or have pre-snap penalties, don't take care of the football or whatever it is, it's going to be a tough day.

"Those things are hard to overcome. We've talked about this from day one: Before we can really focus on and beat another opponent, we have got to stop beating ourselves and that's something that ultimately can creep in. We're trying to stay in the positive growth mindset and 'Okay, how do we handle the next play?''

Coen on Wednesday discussed the possibility of having all four running backs – Travis Etienne Jr., Tank Bigsby, rookie Bhayshul Tuten and rookie LeQuint Allen Jr. – active on Sunday.

"You can," Coen said.

NFL teams often have three running backs on the game-day roster. Bigsby and Etienne are listed as co-starters on the Week 1 unofficial depth chart, with Tuten showing impressive speed and power in the preseason and Allen excelling in third-down situations and in pass protection.

Coen said it's possible to have four backs active, noting that some must contribute on special teams for that to happen.

"That's the big part of it, the special teams availability and dependability," Coen said. "Does that mean we're going to rotate four backs getting carries? I can't say that. That's the kind of challenge we're working through right now, getting through some of that stuff. It's definitely doable. It's just is that the best thing for the team." …
