A reflection on Everton's summer business

This summer was expected to be a busy one for Everton Football club with the departure of nine first-team players, and five loanees David Moyes had a rebuilding job on his hands- one perhaps bigger than he first thought, when he rejoined in January 2025.

With the club moving into their brand new home on the Liverpool waterfront a transition period was expected to happen and with the lose of a key core, this meant that the summer window was massive for Everton, and one that had to get right- something which hasn't been the case with the club.

Most notably the Blues lost Abdoulaye Docuoure and Dominic Calvert-Lewin meanwhile the club lost experience players like Asmir Begovic and Ashely Young.

Club captain Seamus Coleman and Michael Keane extended their stay by a further year, meaning David Moyes still has valuable experience which will be needed for this campaign.

What did the club need addressing ?

Everton have been crying out for a natural right-winger for multiply seasons now, with the last out-and-out winger that they had was Andros Townsend back in 2021.

Everton finally got their man in Tyler Dibling from Southampton after both clubs finally reaching an agreement. Dibling had a promising breakout season down at the south coast.

Another position that needed to be addressed was at right-back with Seamus Coleman entering his 17th season at Everton, the club captain is still Everton's best right-back at the club.

Earlier on in the summer it looked like Kenny Tete was to be Everton's starting right-back, but Fulham came back with an improved offer and Tete stayed.

This leaves Everton with Jake O'Brien , Nathan Patterson and Seamus Coleman still as their options, with James Garner an option if needed. If **Everton**sorted out the right-back position it would of been the perfect window for the club.

Theirno Barry:

The 22-year-old joined the blues from Villarreal for a fee of £27million as he's provided competition to Beto, who ended the 2024/25 season as Everton's starting number 9.

Barry only spent one season at the Yellow Submarines, where he scored 11 times in his debut season in La Liga. Previously the French international scored 20 times for Basel before getting the move to Villarreal.

So far for Everton, Barry has started two games and despite not scoring has shown early promise into his **Everton**career.

Carlos Alcaraz:

Joining the club permanently this summer from Brazilian outfit Flamengo, Alcaraz had a successful time on loan at the Toffees, where he scored and assisted on his first start against Crystal Palace and scored on the late day of the season, with a Tim Cahill esque header against Newcastle.

The Argentine started the season against Leeds United and scored a wonderful long range strike against Mansfield to help Everton progress to round 3 in the Carabao Cup.

Mark Travers + Tom King:

With the loss of Joao Virgina and Asmir Begovic Everton have reshaped their goalkeeping department with Mark Travers joining from Bournemouth and Tom King from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Travers made his Everton debut in the victory over Mansfield keeping a clean sheet in the process.

Both are expected to be understudy to Everton and England's number one Jordan Pickford.

Adam Aznou:

The 19-year-old joined the club from Bayern Munich and will provided back-up to Vitaly Mykolenko. Aznou spent the second-half of the 2024/25 season on loan at Spanish outfit Real Valladolid where he featured 13 times.

The Moroccan international featured for Everton u21s against Doncaster Rovers in the EFL trophy, and has featured three times for his national team.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall:

Signed from Club World Cup champions Chelsea, Dewsbury-Hall has settled into life at his new club with a stunning display against Wolves.

The former **Leicester**man scored a sublime volley which resulted in the winning goal, and was set up Everton's second with a cross in which Illiman Ndiaye tapped in.

The 26-year-old provided with 26 goals involvements when Leicester were crown champions from the championship in 2024 and Everton will hope that he can have the same impact for the Blues.

Jack Grealish:

Everton's marquee signing this summer was the acquisition of three time Premier League winner Jack Grealish who signed on loan from Manchester City.

Grealish shone on his first start for the club setting up two goals as Everton started life at the Hill Dickinson Stadium in the perfect way possible.

Once again he was key in the victory over **Wolves**with every attack being influenced by the 29-year-old showing the qualities he possess and what he adds to an Everton side.

In previous seasons Everton have struggled for creativity but with Grealish and with the free role he has in the side, David Moyes's side are looking dangerous and ruthless in attack.

Tyler Dibling:

The 19-year-old became Everton's eight signing of the summer and is one for the future.

Last season for Southampton, the right-winger scored twice in 33 games in what was the second lowest ever point scoring team in the history of the Premier League, with 11.

Dibling made his debut in the win over Mansfield and was a unused substitute against Wolves.

Merlin Rohl:

Everton's final summer signing was the loan signing of Freiburg midfielder Merlin Rohl, who can operate as a box-to-box midfielder, or can be played deeper and be the 'destroyer' type.

The loan is with a obligation to buy and provides much needed depth and cover to Idrissa Gueye who will leave halfway through the season due to the Africa Cup of Nations.

Rohl, was a member of the Germany u21s team which lost out to England in the final.

Overall feeling on the window

With the club having to revamp the squad it was always going to be a difficult task for David Moyes. With the nine signing it has improved the quality of the squad and has provided much needed depth.

The only outgoing this summer was the departure of Youssef Chermiti who left the club after two years and reunited with Kevin Thelwell at Rangers.

If the right-back position was addressed it would of been the perfect transfer window for Everton as all key positions would of been addressed, however the Blues do have options their and with the form that Jake O'Brien shown there since January, suggests that Everton will be alright.

David Moyes has added flair and dynamism to the forward line and with the structure of Everton's defence the transformation of the squad, in the short amount of time has been drastic.
