Packers head coach Matt LaFleur is "hopeful" that Micah Parsons will play in Week 1
The vibes are high surrounding the Green Bay Packers heading into the 2025 campaign. After the team swung a blockbuster trade with the Dallas Cowboys for superstar linebacker Micah Parsons last week, the sky’s the limit for them as they head into the new season. Head coach Matt LaFleur knows this, and he will be tasked with leading the Packers on a deep playoff run this year.
That starts with a Week 1 matchup against another top contender in the NFC, the Detroit Lions. This is set to be one of the games of the week, and it will be a great measuring stick game for both sides. However, Parsons’ status for this game is up in the air due to a back injury, with LaFleur providing an interesting update on his status on Wednesday.
Matt LaFleur Provides Micah Parsons Injury Update
Earlier this summer, Parsons requested a trade from the Cowboys, as negotiations for a new contract were not progressing as he had hoped. Nobody ever expected Dallas would actually trade him, but sure enough, they sent him to Green Bay in exchange for a pair of first-round draft picks and veteran defensive tackle Kenny Clark.
One team’s trash is another team’s treasure, and the Packers immediately handed Parsons a mammoth four-year, $186 million contract extension after trading for him. Considering how he has racked up 52.5 sacks, four Pro Bowl and two All-Pro First Team selections, and the 2021 Defensive Rookie of the Year Award in the first four seasons of his pro career, Parsons should prove to be well worth that expensive price tag.
The problem in the present day is that Parsons has been dealing with a back injury that could force him to miss Green Bay’s season opener. Parsons is reportedly doing everything in his power to get himself ready for this game, and LaFleur revealed that he’s “hopeful” the Packers’ newest defensive weapon will be on the field on Sunday.
“He’s doing everything in his power,” LaFleur said when speaking to reporters on Sunday. “He’s rehabbing hard. We’ve got to get through a couple practices to see how he responds, to see how he does. But certainly hopeful (he’ll play Sunday).”

Considering how it’s only the start of the regular season, Green Bay is likely going to play things safe with Parsons when push comes to shove. In the grand scheme of things, they’d rather have him on the field for a potential postseason push than force him to play in the season opener. Yes, the excitement surrounding his arrival is exciting, but the new campaign is only just getting started.
If Parsons is given the green light to play, you can bet he’s going to be on the field, and against a high-powered Lions offense, he could be the difference between winning and losing this game. All eyes will be on Parsons’ injury status as the week rolls on, with LaFleur and the Packers hoping he takes the field with the rest of the team at 4:25 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon.
