The [Detroit Lions](http://detroitlions.com) were busy at Allen Park this week, bringing in five players for tryouts as they continue to fine-tune the roster ahead of Week 1 against the Green Bay Packers.
Among the players were two familiar quarterback names: **Nathan Peterman** and **[C.J. Beathard](https://detroitsportsnation.com/lions-sign-cj-beathard-practice-squad/ddrysdale/detroit-lions/09/03/2025/475642/)**.
Peterman, 31, spent last season on the Atlanta Falcons practice squad and has bounced around the league for years. It’s been a while since he’s been on an active roster, but his experience keeps him in the conversation.
Beathard, meanwhile, has more momentum. A former third-round pick in 2017, he’s had stints with the 49ers, Jaguars, and Dolphins. According to multiple reports, the Lions are expected to sign Beathard to their practice squad, giving them an experienced third option behind **Jared Goff** and **Kyle Allen**.
Dan Campbell recently made it clear what he values in a potential QB3: not a developmental project, but someone who could realistically run the offense if needed. Beathard fits that bill.
The Lions also worked out three wide receivers: **Kendric Prior, Malik Cunningham, and Jerjuan Newton**.
Even though Detroit is already loaded with talent at the top — **Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and rookie Isaac TeSlaa** headline the group — bringing in extra bodies for evaluation is part of keeping options open. Cunningham, notably, has been used in hybrid QB/WR roles in the past, making him a unique piece to consider.
The Lions are leaving no stone unturned as Week 1 against Green Bay approaches. Adding **C.J. Beathard** gives them a veteran insurance policy at quarterback, while tryouts for wide receivers show the team isn’t afraid to explore new depth options.
And with Jared Goff taking on more responsibility than ever before, Detroit looks determined to hit the ground running this season.
