The Dallas Cowboys could swoop in to sign All-Pro Jordan Poyer to fill a need at safety.
The Buffalo Bills have recently added several old faces to their roster. Last Wednesday, they signed safety Jordan Poyer to their practice squad. Then, on Tuesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the team would also be bringing back wide receiver Gabe Davis.
Buffalo currently does not have space for Davis to join the practice squad, so they will be releasing Poyer, according to Sal Capaccio from WGR 550. However, the team plans to place Davis on the practice squad injury list, as he is still recovering from a meniscus injury that ended his 2024 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
After Davis is placed on the injury list, the team will likely sign Poyer back to the practice squad on Thursday.
Poyer’s Return to Buffalo Was a Great Move
Bringing Poyer and Davis back to the team is one of the most intelligent decisions the Bills made this offseason. Although Poyer is 34 years old, he can still contribute his leadership skills to the defense.
Poyer spent seven of his 12 NFL seasons with the Bills, from 2017 to 2023. During his tenure with the team, he earned a Pro Bowl selection in 2022 and recorded a total of 682 combined tackles and 22 interceptions.
Last year, Poyer signed with the Miami Dolphins, where he continued to be a tackling machine, accumulating 98 of them. However, he did not record any interceptions.
The Bills’ secondary had a rough preseason, allowing 34 points to the New York Giants and 38 points to the Chicago Bears. Although many of the team’s secondary starters were missing, the situation was still troubling. Buffalo recognized a depth issue in the secondary, and re-signing Poyer could help address it.
Bills Will Need Davis in Playoffs Again
Davis, on the other hand, is unlikely to be ready until the middle of the year, which is when the Bills will need him most. Buffalo realizes that if everyone stays healthy, it can dominate the AFC East. The Bills are expected to make the playoffs once again, and that’s when Davis could make a significant impact.
During the 2021 AFC Divisional Round, Davis had an outstanding performance against the Kansas City Chiefs, recording eight receptions for 201 yards and four touchdowns.
Despite Buffalo’s loss, Davis showed the potential that he can rise to the occasion in playoff moments. He also has a strong connection with quarterback Josh Allen. When Davis visited the Bills in August, Allen shared with the media how much they have kept in touch throughout the year.
“Love that guy, he was awesome when he was here, Allen said, via Bills Wire. We haven’t stopped being in contact since he left.”
Although both Poyer and Davis are currently on the team’s practice squad, there is a strong possibility that they will see game action this year. If the Bills want to reach the Super Bowl, they will need help from veteran players who have experience in the playoffs. Davis and Poyer have participated in significant postseason games in the past, and they could play a critical role in an upcoming game this winter.
