Simmons’ NBA future unclear as shock retirement fears emerge in two-horse race

Ben Simmons’ NBA future is growing increasingly unclear with a bombshell report suggesting the Aussie may walk away entirely despite interest from two teams.

According to an exclusive report from the [New York Post](https://nypost.com/2025/09/03/sports/knicks-one-of-two-teams-interested-in-ben-simmons-if-he-wants-to-keep-playing/), Simmons, who has spent the majority of his past few seasons on the sidelines, is considering turning down multimillion-dollar offers to play next season.

“Ben Simmons has generated interest from the Knicks and another team but is also questioning whether he even wants to continue playing in the NBA next season,” the NY Post reports.

Simmons is still just 29 years old and has reportedly received offers from two American teams, but the combination of a lack of confidence and back issues has led the Aussie to consider whether it is best to call time on his career or, at the very least, leave the NBA.

The Knicks have reportedly tabled an offer valued at more than $5 million a season.

With Boston star Jayson Tatum expected to miss most, if not all, of the 2025-26 season, Simmons could find himself in a system not reliant on him scoring, instead focusing on his strength, defence.

On the _Celtics Talk Podcast_, NBA Insider Chris Forsberg described Simmons as the type of “random swing” worth taking.

It was a sentiment echoed by Celtics reporter Brian Robb.

“There’s still just a big void for where (Jayson) Tatum’s minutes would have been this year and Simmons does a lot — obviously doesn’t do anything nearly as well as Tatum does — but he does some of it. He at least has size and can rebound and can pass.”

It remains to be seen if Simmons will entertain either option, with the Aussie set to decide on his future in the coming weeks.

Simmons has been one of the most polarising players in the NBA.

After emerging as a serious prodigy playing for the college basketball team LSU, he was viewed as the consensus No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft.

During his sole freshman season at LSU, Simmons started 32 games and averaged 19.2 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game, establishing himself as a triple threat.

He was unsurprisingly taken at No. 1 by the struggling Sixers in 2016, who made him the face of the franchise alongside Joel Embiid.

Simmons would sadly miss the 2016 season with a foot injury.

However, when he finally debuted in 2017, Sixers fans immediately fell in love with the young Aussie, who won NBA Rookie of the Year after being a standout across the league.

He appeared in 81 games, averaging 15.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game, truly incredible numbers for a rookie.

In the years that followed from 2018 to 2021, Simmons was an All-Star regular in the NBA.

He formed a dynamic partnership with Embiid, and they went from perennial strugglers to a playoff team.

But he would receive heavy criticism for lacking a championship punch, with all three playoff runs with the Sixers largely underwhelming, as he was exposed at the three-point line and lost faith in his shooting.

In the 2021-22 season, Simmons requested a trade away, keen to join a genuine championship contender.

Eventually, the Sixers and the Brooklyn Nets struck a deal after a long standoff.

But that move would be a disaster.

In his three seasons at the Nets, he only played 33 games as a result of back issues, which would lead to surgery and his confidence in his jumper was at an all-time low.

Simmons eventually reached a contract buyout with the Nets, becoming a free agent and joined the Los Angeles Clippers.

That wouldn’t go much better for him, as his struggles continued, making just 18 appearances and being barely used in the Clippers’ playoff run, averaging well under 10 minutes a game.

With the Los Angeles outfit last season, Simmons averaged a measly 2.9 points, 3.1 assists, and 3.8 rebounds.

The 29-year-old then became a free agent at the end of last season after averaging 5.0 points and 4.7 rebounds per game on 52 per cent shooting from the field, in his last 51 games for the Nets and Clippers combined.

And now Simmons is one of the most notable names still on the free agency market.

It was expected that he would join a new team, but the latest report suggests he may be ready to end what has been a tumultuous NBA career.

Throughout his NBA career, Simmons has averaged 13.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 7.2 assists.
