Kieran Trippier and Jacob Ramsey send messages to Newcastle player after he left on loan

Kieran Trippier and Jacob Ramsey are among the senior Newcastle United players to react after Travis Hernes left the club.

Newcastle have confirmed that Hernes has joined Groningen on loan for the rest of the 2025/26 season.

While Hernes did spend pre-season with the Newcastle United first-team squad, he has now moved to the Dutch side on loan.

That arrangement could become permanent next summer, however. Indeed, Groningen have confirmed that they have the option of making the deal permanent after this season has finished.

The 19-year-old took to social media platform Instagram after the move was confirmed, prompting reactions from the likes of Trippier, Ramsey and others.

Trippier responded with: “Good luck lil bro.”

Ramsey, meanwhile, reacted with a love heart.

Newcastle United just made a U-turn over Travis Hernes

Eddie Howe said he was impressed by Hernes during pre-season, so it seems somewhat strange to have let him leave only a few weeks after that.

Last month, the Newcastle United manager said: “Travis Hernes is another who came on against Spurs – and I was really pleased with him.

“You are looking for somebody to grab their opportunity and force their way into the squad.”

Allowing him to develop elsewhere is one thing but now Groningen have the power to sign him permanently if they so choose.

That’s a shame for Hernes. Clearly, he was making an impact behind the scenes on Tyneside, but now the situation appears to have changed rather dramatically.

The signing of Ramsey does increase competition for places in an already stacked Newcastle United midfield, however, so perhaps the decision to let Hernes leave was taken on that basis.

Hopefully for the player, he can kick on and start to impress in regular first-team football. If he does, Groningen may one day have quite the player on their hands.
