Shock twist: Leeds United tried to hijack Chelsea transfer for 22-year-old winger

Leeds United had a nightmarish end to the summer transfer window. They failed to bring in the attacking reinforcements that Daniel Farke deemed necessary to survive in the Premier League this season.

There is a sense of doom and gloom around Leeds at this stage of the season, despite making a solid start to the campaign, where they have collected four points from their opening three league games. However, their failures on deadline day have overshadowed the work done on the pitch.

Farke made it clear last weekend that Leeds needed more quality in attack to give themselves a better chance of survival in the Premier League, but the club hierarchy failed to add even one more attacking player on deadline day, when their move for Fulham winger Harry Wilson collapsed with minutes left in the window.

Leeds had a few failures in the last summer transfer window, and they made moves for players who ultimately moved somewhere else or stayed back at their respective clubs.

Leeds United made a move for the Strasbourg winger Emmanuel Emegha

Leeds were heavily linked with a move for Dilane Bakwa, who ultimately left Strasbourg for Nottingham Forest on transfer deadline day.

However, the Whites also had one more Strasbourg winger, Emmanuel Emegha, on their radar in the recently concluded summer transfer window.

He scored 14 times in Ligue 1 last season, and the Whites were among the three Premier League clubs who showed an interest in the Dutch winger this summer.

Strasbourg, who are Chelsea’s sister club, decided against letting him go in the last window, and believe he has a future at Stamford Bridge, given his talent levels.

“BlueCo had chances to sell this summer too, but they said no”, Bailey said on The Chelsea Chronicle.

“West Ham love the player, but they are not alone, with both Leeds and Sunderland looking, there were also teams in Italy and Germany.

“Chelsea and BlueCo know they have a huge, huge talent on their hands, and yes, at this point they see him having a future at Stamford Bridge.”

Leeds’ stance on the summer window

The 49ers and the Leeds hierarchy have come under intense scrutiny since the end of the window, with the fans furious at their failure to spend big on forwards.

However, the club are adamant that they did everything they could and spent all the money they could without breaking the Premier League’s financial rules.

Leeds managing director Robbie Evans said: “Yeah, so unequivocally, we are maxing PSR out this season, this summer.

“We spent everything we could. If we had gone onto other targets yesterday or onto higher price players back in July, the consequences would have been seen in the current roster, in terms of players we either could not add beyond the guys that got brought in – so the players that came in in August wouldn’t have come had those deals been made in July – or you’d see more key players from last year’s promotion side having to go.

“And so for us, there were only a handful of players that were worth even considering making those kinds of sales. And when those top players didn’t materialise, we held on to our key players instead.”
