Blackburn Rovers eye free agent following Wolves exit, Birmingham City considered move

Blackburn Rovers are keen on Craig Dawson following his exit from Wolves, according to journalist Alan Nixon on his Patreon page.

Blackburn Rovers are interested in landing the centre-back. Rovers sold Dom Hyam to fellow second tier side Wrexham on deadline day.

Dawson, 35, saw his contract at Wolves expire at the end of last season. He has since been weighing up his options as a free agent.

In this latest update regarding his situation, reporter Nixon has claimed on Patreon that he is wanted by Valerien Ismael’s side. He was on the radar of Birmingham City before they signed Jack Robinson from Sheffield United instead.

Wolves boss Vitor Pereira froze out Dawson during the back end of the last campaign in the Premier League. He said at the time, as per a report by BBC Sport: “I gave the information in advance to the club that if we bring in another centre-back, I will not have space for Craig in the squad. This is something that I spoke with the club (about) for a long time. I had a conversation with the player and I respect the player a lot, and I respect his career, but his profile is not the profile that I’m looking to build the team around.”

Blackburn Rovers could see Dawson as someone to bolster their defensive department. If he joined Rovers, he would give them more competition and depth at the back.

In addition, he would inject some valuable experience into their ranks and fill the void left by Hyam’s departure to Wrexham. He has played over 500 games so far in his career.

Wolves snapped him up in 2023 and he went on to play 61 matches for the Midlands outfit, scoring twice from defence. He has also had spells in the past at Rochdale, West Brom, Bolton Wanderers, Watford and West Ham.

Will Blackburn Rovers sign Craig Dawson?

Blackburn Rovers have been left short after selling Hyam to Wrexham. Rovers could do with acquiring another option in that position to ensure that they have enough bodies.

The transfer window closed on Monday meaning they will have to wait until January to get anyone on a permanent basis or on loan. Therefore, they may well have to acquire a free agent.

With that in mind, they could do a lot worse than Dawson. He knows the Football League inside out and was playing in the top flight last term.

Blackburn Rovers lost 2-0 at home to Norwich City last time out before the international break. They are back in Championship action next weekend against Watford away as they look to return to winning ways.
