PSV Eindhoven’s Joey Veerman has publicly expressed his disappointment after failing to secure a move to Brentford in the recently concluded summer window.
The Netherlands international has been speaking to NOS to share his feelings following the Dutch club’s refusal to let him join Brentford.
Keith Andrews’ side made a concrete move to sign the midfielder towards the end of the window. On August 29th, ESPN NL reported of the Bees tabling a bid, said to be between €25-35m.
According to NOS, the fee proposed by the Premier League club was €25-30m.
Veerman believes the fee offered by Brentford should have been enough to convince the Eredivisie side.
“This train was coming along now, and I wanted to get on. PSV might have seen it that way, but they couldn’t find a replacement. It’s a real shame. It’s a decent amount; apparently, they don’t need it,” he said.
On Wednesday, PSV technical director Earnest Stewart insisted it wasn’t difficult for them to reject Brentford’s proposal because they didn’t have sufficient time to find a quality replacement for the Dutchman. He also said Veerman understood the decision.
The player had a chat with Stewart and PSV general manager, Marcel Brands, to make his feelings clear.
“I said I was disappointed. They knew I wanted to transfer and that an offer could come,” Veerman explained.
The PSV midfielder has partly pinned the blame on the Premier League club for his failed move.
“If Brentford had come earlier, the deal would have been done,” he added.
“They waited too long. The clause in my contract expired two weeks before the deadline. I understand [PSV’s] position, and I can’t change the fact that they couldn’t find a suitable replacement.”
