Mason Mount responds as Ben Chilwell waves goodbye to Chelsea with heartfelt post

Ben Chilwell completed a permanent move away from Chelsea in the closing stages of the summer transfer window. He’s now celebrated five years at Stamford Bridge with a heartfelt goodbye message on social media.

Chelsea signed Ben Chilwell from Leicester City back in 2020, and on reflection he was a definite success in West London.

It’s unfortunate for the 28-year-old left-back that his time with the Blues ended quietly, partly down to frequent injury problems. On top of that, he didn’t fit into Enzo Maresca’s plans and was loaned out to Crystal Palace in the second half of last season.

However, he was a key part of the Chelsea side that famously won the Champions League back in 2021.

Ben Chilwell’s record in senior football

Chilwell joined Strasbourg on deadline day on a two-year deal, so it’s a chance for the English defender to reignite his career in France’s top division. Incidentally, Everton offered to take Chilwell on loan in the final stages of the summer transfer window.

He’s uploaded a heartfelt farewell message on Instagram after leaving permanently to join Strasbourg. It’s quite telling that the comment section is filled with messages from former teammates, including Mason Mount, sending their appreciation.

What Jason Cundy once said about Ben Chilwell

Without a doubt, Chilwell was once instrumental in the Chelsea side, providing so much energy up and down the pitch from a left-back/left wing-back role.

Back in January 2022, Jason Cundy hailed Chilwell and Reece James as Chelsea’s two most important players because the wing-back pair were so influential in Thomas Tuchel’s system.

The Blues are still in safe hands at left-back with the emergence of Marc Cucurella. Also, Jorrel Hato looks like he could be an excellent deputy this campaign.

It should not be overlooked just how good Chilwell was in his best years at Chelsea, though.
