Late in the summer transfer window, Gianluca di Marzio reported Newcastle United had come forward for Inter Milan’s Davide Frattesi.
The Nerazzurri rejected the approach and a source told Sport Witness a transfer would be very difficult, as the Italian side saw the midfielder as a key player for the 2025/26 season.
Today’s Gazzetta dello Sport has more information on Newcastle United’s interest in Frattesi.
They report that the 25-year-old was tempted to join the Magpies, with the newspaper describing them as a club for the ‘working class hero’.
They state Frattesi is aiming for redemption this season after a struggle for regular game time under Simone Inzaghi in the previous campaign and is ‘haunted’ by the ‘incompleteness’ of how Inter finished the season with no trophies.
This is why he would have considered a move to Newcastle United, but it is noted that Eddie Howe’s side never met the Nerazzurri’s asking price of €45m to €50m.
Now, a new contract for the Italy international is a topic for discussion at Inter, with manager Cristian Chivu viewing him as a key part of his side.
The Romanian has informed Frattesi about his desire to use him in a very particular way and this has encouraged the Roma youth graduate to prepare well after having had hernia surgery two months ago.
Gazzetta explain the fast paced football of the Premier League is another attraction for Frattesi so perhaps this one can rise again in the future.
