Cody Gakpo has revealed that Bayern Munich made their interest known during the transfer window. But the striker ut says his new contract is proof of his long-term commitment to Liverpool.
Gakpo penned an extension that was made official on Saturday but had interest from Bundesliga champions Bayern as they searched for reinforcements up top after missing out on Florian Wirtz, who joined Liverpool, and Athletic Club's Nico Williams, who also shunned Barcelona advances to sign new terms with the La Liga side.
Speaking to ESPN in his homeland while on international duty, Gakpo has now explained how Bayern made their interest known before they were forced to pivot to Luis Diaz, who moved in late July in a £65m deal.
And the former PSV frontman also told how it took around a year to thrash out the specifics of a contract that will keep him on Merseyside beyond 2028.
"If the future is uncertain, then it will just be a very difficult story," Gakpo said.
"I think it took us a year. Maybe a little longer or shorter, but it's just a long process.
"From what I understand, they (Bayern) have come, but in the end they have bought Luis Diaz.
"It's nice. Of course, I have experienced it differently myself. Such a transfer window can be hectic and stressful for a player and everyone around him. That doesn't bother me anymore.
"It's difficult, because a lot is happening. Other clubs come to you, but you may want to keep your own club.
"Everyone deals with it in their own way, but it is certainly difficult. If the future is uncertain, then it will just be a very difficult story."
Gakpo is expected to be involved for Ronald Koeman's Oranje when they play Poland in a World Cup qualifier on Thursday night in Rotterdam.
