Gianluigi Donnarumma makes worrying Manchester City admission ahead of debut

Gianluigi Donnarumma secured a move to Manchester City at the end of the summer transfer window, but he’s now made an admission that might worry fans.

Pep Guardiola had the challenge of replacing Ederson this summer, as the Brazilian goalkeeper departed the Etihad Stadium to join Fenerbahce.

Man City paid Paris St-Germain £26million for Donnarumma, with the Italian international now ready to make his Premier League debut for the club.

The 26-year-old could make his first appearance for Guardiola’s team on Sunday, 14th September in a huge derby day against Manchester United.

Gianluigi Donnarumma admits there will be mistakes

Donnarumma will have the weight of expectation on his shoulders when he first lines up for Manchester City, given the talent of the previous number one, Ederson, and he’s admitted mistakes will come.

This is particularly true when it comes to playing out from the back, a style of play that Guardiola has adopted and actively encourages from his defensive unit.

However, when speaking to the press ahead of Italy’s upcoming international fixtures, Donnarumma made it clear he’s confident with the ball at his feet, even if mistakes can follow.

“My goal is to win as much as possible, it’s not easy, there’s work to do. We want to win as much as possible with Man City, and with the Italian national team.

“No, I don’t think there are problems with using the feet from what I’ve accomplished from when I started playing in Serie A at 16.

“There can always be mistakes, there will always be. But I think I’ve accomplished great things.”

James Trafford will aim to push Donnarumma for Manchester City’s number one spot

Even though there is a presumption among football fans that Donnarumma will immediately slot in as the first-choice goalkeeper at the Etihad Stadium, he’s not the only shot-stopper the club signed this summer.

James Trafford joined Manchester City earlier in the transfer window in a deal worth £31million, with the former Burnley star signing a five-year contract.

The 22-year-old impressed last season, with Burnley setting a record for keeping 29 clean sheets, which earned Trafford plenty of admirers.

Manchester City had a matching clause in his contract from when they sold him to Burnley, and they exercised that when Newcastle United bid for Trafford.

Trafford has played all three Premier League games this season and kept one clean sheet, and has made the second-highest number of saves in the opening fixtures across the division.
