Joy Taylor Opens Up on Cam Newton’s Podcast About Misogyny, Racism, and Bias in Sports Media
Last month, Joy Taylor, the former host of Fox Sports 1 [FS1], joined former NFL QB Cam Newton on his podcast and talked about women in sports media. She said women are often judged differently.
“If you think sports media is fair to women, what comes with the controversy happening behind the scenes? There are things we can do to make things more equitable. There are adjustments we can make in society to protect people.” [35: 50]
“ I’m not dismissing any of it, but it’s still a very misogynistic space. If you ever are confused about that, you can go read any comment on any social media platform I have. You’ll get your daily dosage of it,” Taylor said.
She added, “If you make a mistake, I mean, you cannot make a mistake on air as a woman. You just cannot. You can’t say someone got traded when they got cut. You can’t mispronounce someone’s name.”
The 38-year-old said that as a woman in sports media, you’re expected to be perfect, and as a Black woman, you also face the added challenge of racism, which still exists and cannot be ignored.
Taylor shared that women in sports often face unfair treatment fueled by classism, colorism, and other biases. She noted that these issues are visible both online and in everyday life, as people openly express their prejudices. According to her, the criticism women receive is not limited to a few individuals but something seen across the industry whenever women are involved.
Despite these challenges, Taylor expressed hope for the future. She believes that as sports continue to grow, create more opportunities, and bring in greater diversity, the industry will gradually move away from such biases and become more inclusive.
