Baker Mayfield just gave Jaguars offense best imaginable endorsement

First-year head coach Liam Coen is molding the Jacksonville Jaguars into a tougher team. At the same time, he's doing his best to replicate the offensive success he had with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last year.

Quarterback Baker Mayfield experienced firsthand just how good Coen's scheme was in 2024. That's probably why he doesn't mind heaping massive praise on his former offensive coordinator.

Baker Mayfield says Trevor Lawrence will have fun on the Jaguars offense

Trevor Lawrence met with the local media ahead of the Week 1 matchup against the Carolina Panthers and revealed that Baker Mayfield's told him he's going to love Liam Coen's offense.

"I talked to him a few times, and yeah, gave me a lot of confidence," Lawrence said. I've heard great things from other people as well, coming into — whether it's about Liam or the system or whatever, but here, in his experience and obviously, what they were able to do last year as an offense was super impressive, and especially as an individual, Baker played really well."

Lawrence continued, "So just talking to him, and he's told me how much I'm going to love the offense, how much it's going to help me and help our offense, really, go to the next level, all those things. I mean, he's been a huge help for me, and given me a lot of confidence."

Leaving aside Mayfield's endorsement, the results speak for themselves. Under Coen, the first overall pick in the 2018 draft set career bests in several categories. On top of that, he got the Buccaneers running game going, turning it from one of the worst in the league the season prior to one of the top five best in a span of one year.

No wonder Mayfield didn't want to lose his offensive coordinator.

Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars are already showing progress under Liam Coen

Coming off a pair of injury-marred seasons, Trevor Lawrence had to rehab his shoulder while working on his mechanics and learning Liam Coen's system. Based on how things have played out, it looks like he was able to handle it all smoothly.

Lawrence showed notable improvement in training camp and in the offseason. On the other hand, the running game has shown signs of life with Travis Etienne and Tank Bigsby in the backfield. When you add it all up, it's easy to see why the Jaguars are set to make noise in Coen's first year at the helm.

Is it too premature to say the Jags will have success this upcoming season? Maybe, maybe not, but based on Trevor Lawrence's notable improvement, along with Baker Mayfield's remarks, it's difficult not to get hyped up about Liam Coen's arrival in Jacksonville.

In fact, the Jaguars' place in NFL power rankings may be too low when you think about it. They'll have a chance to prove it when they welcome the Panthers.
