Merseyside Police later named the suspect as Paul Doyle, a 53-year-old man and local businessman.
Mr Doyle has pleaded not guilty to 31 charges, having been accused of 'using a car as a weapon'.

Mr Doyle appeared at Liverpool Crown Court via a video link from prison.

His legal team are said to have had difficulty with accessing him in prison, with in-person visits or video conferences taking weeks.
"The system just isn't working," said Simon Csoka, KC, defending.
Mr Csoka also claimed that Belmarsh Prison hadn't yet arranged a laptop for Mr Doyle in custody to review CCTV and digital evidence.
He described the prison's approach as 'incomprehensible', and said the defence faced 'impenetrable red tape' in providing a laptop.
