Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni has insisted that Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has joined the squad in good mood, despite seeing a move to Manchester United fall through.

Martinez will again be part of his squad but whether he plays remains to be seen after a rocky start to the season and a turbulent end to the summer transfer window.

Most had assumed the goalkeeper would be leaving Aston Villa this summer after emotional scenes at Villa Park at the end of last season.

He was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United and they bid for him at one point, offering a loan deal that was swiftly rejected by Aston Villa.

Rumours about a return for him continued up until deadline day but were then quickly dismissed as Manchester United instead signed youngster Senne Lammens.

That left Martinez at Aston Villa looking to pick up the pieces. His relationship with the club and the fans has taken something of a battering thanks to the rumours and the perception of him pushing for the move to Manchester United.

For now, he’s on international duty and Scaloni insists he’s in a fine mood, although he was excited about the prospect of moving to Old Trafford.

_“Dibu is fine. His move didn’t go through,”_ he said.

_“He was happy for his birthday. Obviously, he was excited to play for Manchester United, but he’s a positive kid who’s thinking about us, and when he returns, he’ll be thinking about his club._

_“We’ll wait and see what happens with Dibu. It’s true that we’re interested in him playing, but we’re not going to get ahead of ourselves. I understand that if he stays, he’ll continue to play, but there’s no need to get ahead of himself.”_
